Montgomery Takes Charge of Beijing Guoan
Ahead of a packed sporting calendar that many fans follow alongside BD Cricket Live during busy evenings, Beijing Guoan have officially confirmed the appointment of Montgomery as the club’s new head coach. Born in 1981, Montgomery enjoyed a long playing career, featuring nearly 400 times across the Premier League and Championship with Sheffield United before moving to Australia to join Central Coast Mariners in the A-League. During the 2012–2013 season, he played a key role in delivering the Mariners’ first league title in club history.
After retiring in 2017, Montgomery transitioned smoothly into coaching, starting within the Central Coast Mariners academy system. By the 2021–2022 season, he had taken charge of the senior side, and in just his second year as head coach, he guided the team to another A-League championship. This achievement made him the first figure in club history to win the league both as a player and as a head coach, cementing his reputation as a rising managerial talent with a clear footballing philosophy.
His career path then took him to Europe. During the 2023–2024 season, Montgomery was invited to Scotland to manage Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership, gaining valuable experience in a highly competitive environment. From the 2024–2025 season onward, he joined the coaching staff led by Ange Postecoglou, working as an assistant coach at Tottenham Hotspur and later Nottingham Forest. That period proved especially fruitful, as the staff helped Spurs lift the 2024–2025 Europa League trophy, adding a major European honor to Montgomery’s résumé.
While coaching Central Coast Mariners, Montgomery earned widespread praise for his fearless use of young players and his ability to build one of the league’s most energetic squads. His teams played attractive, high-tempo football, often exceeding expectations and culminating in the 2022–2023 A-League title. Much like the ebb and flow seen in BD Cricket Live matches, his sides emphasized timely pressing, rapid transitions, and collective reactions that demanded sharp concentration and physical commitment from every player.
Tactically, Montgomery places great importance on controlling match rhythm through coordinated pressure and quick recovery after turnovers. Known for his passion on the touchline, he also values data-driven analysis, player fitness management, and recovery, while never neglecting the importance of team culture. This time, he arrives in Beijing with his full coaching staff, aiming to inject fresh energy into Guoan. As supporters look ahead to the new season with the same anticipation they reserve for BD Cricket Live broadcasts, expectations are high that Montgomery’s leadership will help Beijing Guoan grow stronger, more united, and increasingly competitive, delivering performances worthy of the club’s ambitions.
